  • Mopar packages deliver factory-authorized upgrades
  • Appearance and performance kits enhance Chrysler 200 Super
  • Dodge Charger Redline turns out 590 horsepower with Stage Three package

Since the 1960s, Mopar, Chrysler's service and parts arm, has been providing performance parts to turn docile, everyday automobiles into monsters of the drag strip and oval track. Often sold in packages, upgrades were commonly specified for road-going cars, too, allowing owners to take advantage of factory-authorized modifications for quicker acceleration and better handling. Fortunately for today's drivers, Mopar is still at it. Their newest creations, both debuting at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, are the Chrysler 200 Super S and the Dodge Charger Redline.

The Chrysler 200, which replaced the Sebring for the 2011 model year, starts life as a mid-size sedan. Mopar upgrades transform it into the 200 Super S in two ways: Stage One provides cosmetic enhancements while Stage Two focuses on performance.

The 200 Super S has a modified look apparent from first glance thanks to Stage One's chin and trunk lid spoilers, 18-inch “S” alloy wheels, and satin chrome trim. Blacked-out mesh replaces chrome bars in the upper grille, and badges are finished in black chrome. A rear diffuser with integrated exhaust outlets completes the look.

Stage Two upgrades are aimed at performance. This package provides coil-over suspension, a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust. The suspension upgrade enhances appearance, too, lowering the ride height and giving the Super S an unmistakably sporty, lowered look.

With three upgrade packages for the Dodge Charger, Mopar gives customers the option to upgrade styling and handling as on the 200 Super S, or transform this full-size sedan into a 590-horsepower, Hemi-powered beast. Stage One for the Charger Redline includes special 20-inch “pitch black” wheels, carbon fiber chin and rear spoilers, carbon fiber door scoops and “R/T” badging to match that of the memorable 1970 Charger. Stage One includes interior upgrades as well, with a Mopar aluminum shifter bezel and instrument bezel and stainless steel pedals with a rubberized pattern.

Should the Charger Redline driver require performance upgrades to match, Stage Two provides a cat-back exhaust for a horsepower bump and a throatier sound. A front tower cross-brace and front tower brace caps add rigidity and improve handling, while Mopar brake linings provide track-tested stopping power.

Stage Three separates the boulevard cruiser from the drag strip car. This final upgrade brings to the Charger Redline a 426 cubic-inch aluminum crate motor intended only for the track. This Hemi V8 is Mopar's latest high-output, professionally-built race engine with a forged-steel crank and rods and aluminum pistons. With a compression ratio of 11:1 and performance tuning, the Charger Redline Stage Three is good for 590 horsepower, 220 more than the Charger R/T and 120 more than the Charger SRT8.

Mopar gives Dodge and Chrysler drivers excellent options with these packages for Chrysler 200 and Dodge Charger, but the parts group also markets upgrades individually, so you can pick and choose the ones you like best.

What it means to you: Dodge Charger Redline and Chrysler 200 Super S bring Mopar upgrades from mild to wild. Look for both at NAIAS in Detroit this month, or in showrooms later this year.
