I recently had the opportunity to spent the afternoon with Jay Leno in order to film an episode of his show, "Jay Leno's Garage," which airs on CNBC. My particular episode will go live in a few months, and filming it was a huge thrill -- but not as much of a thrill as seeing Jay's car collection, which he showed me after the filming ended.

Jay has just about everything from every era -- from turn-of-the-century steam-powered cars to a new Ford GT, which he told me is arriving in the next couple of months. But one of the crown jewels of the Jay Leno car collection is undoubtedly his McLaren F1, an ultra-rare supercar made in the 1990s. Jay opened up the F1 for me, he let me sit in it, and then he told me something interesting about it: It has three trunks.

I've always known the McLaren F1 has three seats, and I've always rolled my eyes a bit when people have insisted it's a "practical" car because of those seats. To me, there's not much that's practical about a car that costs $15 million, uses a V12 engine, has doors that open upwards and draws massive attention from every single car enthusiast on the planet. But when Jay showed me the F1, he reiterated the "practical car" comment -- and then he revealed the trunks. Maybe it is a little practical after all.

Here's how it works: The McLaren F1 has the front trunk, just like most midengine exotic cars. The front trunk, it should be noted, isn't really all that big -- and I thought that's where the storage space ended. But it isn't. The McLaren F1 also has trunks on the side. Between the car's door and the rear wheel is a huge panel that can be opened to reveal considerably more storage, and there's one of these panels on either side. Most importantly, they're surprisingly large -- big enough to carry around some small luggage, which McLaren undoubtedly made to suit the vehicle.

I also had the opportunity to sit in the McLaren F1, which was an experience in itself -- both climbing in, which was relatively easy, and climbing out, which wasn't. I pushed the clutch. I touched the gear lever. I touched the turn-signal stalk. In a McLaren F1! A highly practical, three-trunked McLaren F1.
