Late at night, when you're all asleep, I browse the internet for cool car things. I do not do this willingly. I do it because there is a compulsion, deep within my soul, to find cool car things on the internet. I will be doing it at 2 a.m. tonight. Feel free to give me a call.

Anyway, the other night, as I was going down the deep dark hole of expedition vehicles, I found something really cool. It's a company called EarthRoamer, and it converts Ford Super Duty pickups into the most exciting, most capable, and most expensive recreation vehicles you'll ever find in your entire life.

I'll start with "most expensive," just so I don't get you too excited before you know the cost. An EarthRoamer RV, which looks like a Ford Super Duty pickup wearing a specialized camper shell, ranges in cost from $438,000 to $575,000 for the XV-LTS model, depending on "options." Keep in mind that a standard Ford F-Series Super Duty starts at $33,500, and goes to something like $63,000, or maybe closer to $75,000 when fully loaded with options -- which means EarthRoamer claims to add between $350,000 and $500,000 in value to these things.

So do they?

Well, the list of standard features is indeed amazing: It goes on for four pages in rather small font, and it includes things that you or I have never heard of, such as a "macerator pump for the galley sink drain" and "Chilewich Plynyl flooring." Other items on the list of standard features include a dispenser for the shampoo, conditioner and soap, a wood or tile backsplash, a magazine rack and a hidden safe. This is, after all, a go-anywhere recreational vehicle.

Then we must get to the options, which are also wildly plentiful. The options list also goes on for four pages, in even smaller font, and it includes things like a wine rack (that'll be $1,037), a driver's-side electric reclining sofa ($5,119), an "ultimate entertainment package with Bose surround sound" ($10,763) and a Keurig coffeemaker ($571).

You're probably starting to understand why this thing is so expensive: It's the ultimate "spare no expense" RV, for the ultimate people, who want to go to the ultimate destinations, without really making any sacrifices. Want to go out into the wilderness, but still want "premium leather upholstery"? EarthRoamer will do that -- for $3,800. There's also an entire blank page devoted to "custom options," to be handwritten by the purchaser.

You’ll also start to understand why this is so expensive when you check out the photos. This isn’t your regular family RV: in addition to using a capable super duty pickup basis and a long-lasting diesel engine, it offers improved suspension and tires for off-roading, and a gorgeous interior designed to keep you comfortable in the most hospitable terrain.

And it gets even better: the EarthRoamer is so good for going anywhere that it’s designed to be completely self-sufficient. All the interior accessories are solar-powered, and the diesel fuel tank can power the truck for over a month before it needs to be refilled. And here’s the best part: supposedly, you can pull water from any source -- fresh or salt -- and the truck will desalinize it, purify it, and store it in its fresh water tanks. Think about that for a second. The truck is its on desalinization plant! This might just be the single best go-anywhere vehicle in the world.

And guess what? You can buy one right now -- it takes EarthRoamer about 8 to 12 months to create a vehicle to your specifications. That's no surprise. Surely it takes a lot of time to install the vaulted ceilings with premium soft-touch headliner.
