  • Chrysler is recalling 65 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs
  • The SUVs include a part that wasn't properly treated for high temperatures
  • More than 7,500 vehicles are affected, but only 65 have been sold to buyers

Fiat Chrysler has announced an urgent recall of 65 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. So urgent, in fact, that the automaker will be calling the owners of the affected SUVs and telling them to stop driving the vehicles until the problem can be fixed.

The automaker recently announced that an error in the production process could cause a crucial suspension component in the affected vehicles to break, resulting in rear-end instability or reduced braking power. The component is especially at risk in extreme heat, as the affected part wasn't correctly treated by the supplier for high temperatures.

In all, the problem affects 7,690 units of the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee -- but 7,625 affected vehicles remain unsold on the lots of Dodge and Jeep dealers across the country. Those vehicles will be inspected and, if necessary, treated to replacement parts before being sold to a consumer. Meanwhile, the remaining 65 sold units apparently pose such a high safety risk that Chrysler will be calling owners and asking them to immediately head to the dealership for an inspection.

Although owners of the 65 affected Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs should expect a forthcoming call from Fiat Chrysler to let them know of their status, worried drivers can log on to Chrysler's recall site and plug in their VIN number to see if their vehicle is included in the recall. According to Chrysler, all affected vehicles were built on the same day in the automaker's Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.

What it means to you: Given the small number of vehicles involved, it's unlikely that you're affected by this recall, but if you are, be sure to stop driving your vehicle and quickly schedule an appointment at a Jeep or Dodge dealer for an inspection.
