The new Audi RS 3 is not a Volkswagen Golf. Yes, it's built on the same MQB platform as the Golf, along with the rest of the Audi A3 family, but it is certainly not a Golf. Please do not be mistaken: The RS 3 takes the platform far, far beyond what the Golf delivers, to the point where the only similarity is size.

What it is is an absolute rocket. The RS 3 will do zero to 60 mph in under 4 seconds with launch control, courtesy of a 400-horsepower turbocharged 5-cylinder that delivers power to all four wheels while screaming out an engine note that's as unique as it is beautiful. But those numbers don't tell the whole story -- the way the RS 3 delivers that acceleration is with a nearly immediate gut-punch of torque low in the rev range. It's a wonderful sensation I haven't felt in many cars, and it makes it infinitely entertaining and engaging.

In corners, it's almost too predictable. The limits of this car are far beyond my driving ability, and I would have to spend a lot of time with it before I felt comfortable searching for them. Sure, a BMW M2 may be a bit more playful around curves, but it's also slower in a straight line and less practical due to its 2-door deficit.

In fact, that's the other great thing about the RS 3. The 2-door BMW M2 simply cannot compete with 4-door practicality. Audi's interior design is also currently on point, with aerospace-like vents and luxurious interior fittings and trims. You also can get the Audi MMI and Digital Dash infotainment system, which is one of the better and more intuitive systems I've seen.

In terms of pricing, the RS3 will cost you about $55,450 for the most basic model -- but that number can quickly rise as you add in features like the $4,800 Dynamic Plus package, which comes with ceramic brakes and a fancy suspension, the $3,200 Technology package, which gives you Bang & Olufsen sound and the MMI Navigation, or the $1,400 Driver Assistance package, which will give you adaptive cruise control and other goodies. I wouldn't be surprised if most RS 3s will be equipped to over $65,000.

But I don't think I'd need all those extras. At $55,450, this is a lot of car for the money. If I could afford it, I would spend that money in a heartbeat. The RS 3 is an insanely good car, and I hope to get more time with one in the future.
