  • New company lets you rent out your car while you're traveling
  • Drivers can make $25 to $100 per day and save on airport parking costs
  • Company offers car service from its parking lot to airport terminal

A new car-sharing company hopes to change the way you think about airport parking. The company is called FlightCar, and its business plan involves letting other people rent out your car when you're on the go.

Like most car-sharing services, FlightCar gives you the opportunity to make money by renting out your car, but the company also offers another benefit: Since your car will be rented out while you're traveling, you won't pay for airport parking. Instead, you'll park for free, and you'll even make money while your car is in use.

For those interested in sharing their vehicles, here's how it works: Rather than driving to an airport parking lot and paying for parking, you drop off your vehicle at a FlightCar parking lot near the airport. From there, one of the company's drivers brings you to the airport. While you're away on your trip, your car can be rented out for $25 to $100 per day, depending on the vehicle's age, condition and equipment. Not only can you make money, but you'll save on the cost of airport parking.

According to FlightCar, the company's founders came up with the idea for the business when they considered just how many cars sit unmanned every day at the airport. By the same token, a large number of travelers arriving at each airport need rental cars -- and the business idea was born.

While FlightCar says that you won't earn anything if your car isn't rented during your travel period, you'll still get free parking and a car wash -- not a bad deal when you compare it to traditional airport parking.

What it means to you: Although finicky car enthusiasts might not like the idea of someone else driving their vehicle, FlightCar gives most car owners a great way to make -- and save -- money while they're traveling.
