Ford announced that a hybrid Mustang and F-150 will be among the 13 new electrified vehicles it plans to introduce globally within the next five years. Also on the menu is an electric small SUV that will offer an estimated 300 miles of range.

Of the new Ford Mustang Hybrid, the company indicated that the gasoline-electric version of its iconic pony car will "deliver V8 power and even more low-end torque," though it didn't indicate what sort of fuel economy we can expect. As such, it's difficult to determine whether the Mustang Hybrid will be environmentally and economically oriented, as one might assume, or performance-oriented. In the past, certain car companies have used hybrid componentry to boost performance with negligible fuel economy benefits and subsequently meager sales. As such, it seems like a safe bet that Ford will strike some sort of middle ground.

The F-150 Hybrid promises "powerful towing and payload capacity," along with the ability to operate as a mobile generator. The latter ability could be particularly helpful at job sites or when tailgating. Ford has indicated the F-150 will only be available with rear-wheel drive.

The F-150 and Mustang already share some powertrain components, including their 5.0-liter V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission. It seems likely that the latter would be utilized in the hybrids and packaged with an electric motor. A turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder also seems likely for the hybrid engine, as Ford has already announced its use in other global-market hybrid vehicles.

Meanwhile, details were light on the all-electric SUV beyond that it would be small, estimated to travel at least 300 miles on a charge and be built at Ford's Flat Rock plant in Michigan. Given its size and all-electric range, parallels could certainly be drawn with the Chevrolet Bolt.

Ford announced that its new electric SUV and the hybrid Mustang and F-150 can be expected by 2020.
