The fully-electric 2012 Ford Focus Electric will start at $39,995 including destination when it arrives in dealers later this year. That's the latest from Ford, who also recently launched the EV's online configurator and officially began taking orders in the hatchback's initial launch markets.

With its recently announced price tag, the Focus Electric will directly square off against earth-saving rivals like the fully-electric Nissan Leaf, which starts at $36,050, and the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, which also starts at $39,995 including destination. According to the automaker, buyers are also eligible for federal tax credits of up to $7,500, plus any applicable local rebates.

So what do you get for $39,995? For that, we have to turn to Ford's new online configurator. Due to its large premium over the standard Focus, many upscale features are already standard, including the automaker's MyFord Touch infotainment system, 17-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, push-button start and even a navigation system. In fact, the car's only options are leather upholstery, which goes for $995, and two special paint colors: Candy Blue ($395) and White Platinum ($495).

But for most buyers, interior amenities are unimportant compared to what's under the Focus Electric's hood. According to Ford, the hatchback features a 123-horsepower electric motor powered by a 23 kWh lithium-ion battery and a single-speed automatic. The automaker says the all-electric Focus is capable of up to 100 miles on a single charge, and can be fully recharged in 18 to 20 hours in a typical 120-volt outlet or just three hours by a special 240-volt charger. For the most environmentally conscious consumers, Ford is also partnering with energy products firm SunPower to offer a home solar charging option.

For now, Ford is only taking orders for the Focus Electric from dealers in California, New York and New Jersey, with early deliveries expected by the end of the year. Next year, the automaker will expand the Focus Electric's availability to include 15 other markets, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit and Los Angeles.
