Proving that first impressions don’t always last, the new GMC Hummer EV SUV moves the iconic off-road brand in a decidedly more eco-friendly direction.
The 2024 Hummer EV SUV follows in the burly tire tracks of the brand’s past models in terms of its rugged, boxy styling and serious ground clearance. However, underhood it boasts an electric powertrain with up to three motors rated at a staggering 830 horsepower and — get this — 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Compare that to other off-road vehicles such as the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner that deliver around 300 lb-ft of torque and it’s no wonder GMC is quoting a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds.
The SUV version of the rebooted Hummer rides on a 126.7-inch wheelbase that’s about 9 inches shorter than the previously announced GMC Hummer EV pickup. It stretches a more manageable 196.8 inches between its bumpers. That shorter wheelbase also improves its breakover angle to an impressive 34.4 degrees. Its turning circle is just 35.4 feet with the optional 4-wheel steering package.
An optional generator provides 19.2 kW of AC power, which GMC says is enough to juice up other electric vehicles in a pinch.
The 2024 Hummer EV SUV won’t go on sale until 2023. It launches first in Edition 1 trim with a special matte green paint option. There’s also an available Extreme Off-Road Package that adds 35-inch off-road tires, locking differentials, underbody protection and cameras, and a few other goodies. Find a Hummer for sale
