There once was a time, back in the 2000s, when you could order your GMC pickups -- like the GMC Sierra -- with the turning circle of a Chevrolet Cavalier. This was due to an optional 4-wheel steering system called Quadrasteer, which remains one of the coolest things to grace a pickup truck in modern times.

Here's how it worked: Unlike some 4-wheel steering systems on modern cars, which are designed to improve high-speed handling, Quadrasteer kicked into action for low-speed maneuvers.

You'd be trying to do something with your pickup in a tight space, like backing a boat trailer down a boat ramp. You'd have your steering wheel fully locked in one direction. You'd be cursing, sweating and stressed. ... and then the rear wheels would turn the opposite direction of the front wheels, decreasing your turning circle and allowing you to place your pickup just about anywhere you wanted.

Initially, the system was rather popular, and General Motors said they'd have it in all their GMC pickups within a few years. After it became available in the GMC Sierra in 2002, it eventually found its way into the Yukon XL, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Chevrolet Suburban. But it didn't last for long: When the pickups and SUVs were redesigned later in the 2000s, Quadrasteer wasn't on the options list -- and it hasn't been back since.

A few months ago, I was attending a GMC press event, and I was riding in the car with an executive from GMC. I asked about Quadrasteer, and he chuckled before informing me they had no plans to bring it back. So, diehard Quadrasteer owners, you'd better hope your pickup doesn't get in a serious accident, or else it's back to normal 2-wheel steering for you.
