- Lists towing capacities for GMC truck models
- Recommends truck by trailering needs
- Includes tips and techniques for proper towing
Coinciding with the introduction of its all-new 2014 Sierra pickup, GMC launched an app designed to help drivers tow trailers safely and effectively. The app, launched recently through the iTunes store, lists towing capacities by truck model, recommends a truck according to towing needs and includes tips and techniques for proper towing.
Drivers that pull trailers need to understand the towing capacity of the trucks they use to prevent dangerous overloading. Capacity depends on how a truck is equipped. For example, regular and crew cab trucks typically offer different towing capacities and the same is true for 2-wheel drive versus 4×4. Each variable can affect a pickup’s towing weight rating, so it’s important for drivers who tow to identify their exact model.
Once drivers have selected a model, the app reveals towing capability. Alternately, a driver can identify the best truck for a given towing job by identifying the type and weight of trailer and other hauling needs. Even the number of passengers or the amount of cargo in the truck bed during towing can affect capacity. The vehicle recommendation tool included in GMC’s trailering app takes these factors into account.
Drivers with less demanding towing needs can still benefit from the app thanks to the trailering tips and techniques it includes. A series of GMC videos helps drivers learn to tow safely by explaining GMC towing technologies such as trailer grade braking and sway control. Other videos give an overview of trailering, explain trailer hitches and equipment and outline safe towing techniques. The app even includes a glossary of trailer and towing terminology to help beginners.
A trailering checklist bundled in the app is one of its most helpful tools both for drivers experienced with towing and those new to it. The checklist encourages drivers to be sure everything is ready — truck engine and brakes, lights, and trailer hitch and trailer– before setting out on their journeys. Completing a checklist is a smart move, as it can prevent a roadside breakdown resulting from a trailer tire that’s low on pressure, for instance.
Hugh Milne, GMC Training and Accessory manager, remarked that all those who pull trailers can benefit from the app. “Even for customers who’ve been trailering for years, our continuing enhancements in features, power and technology make the GMC Trailering Guide App a handy resource,” Milne said.
The app can be helpful for those who intend to tow with a new truck, too. Truck shoppers can find a vehicle that meets their towing needs using the app.
