Color us unsurprised: A GMC executive recently let loose that the automaker will eventually sell an electric pickup truck that isn’t a Hummer.
Given the shift toward electrification, it was only a matter of time before GMC confirmed plans to sell a truck without an internal combustion engine.
Speaking with Automotive News, GMC boss Duncan Aldred said that an electric GMC truck will arrive in “due course.”
The stepping stones have clearly been laid.
For one, GMC parent General Motors will reboot the Hummer brand under the GMC umbrella by the end of this year, first with an electric pickup and a year or so later with an electric SUV.
Secondly, GMC sibling Chevrolet has already confirmed that it will build an electric version of its Silverado truck.
The GMC Hummer models and the Silverado EV will be built alongside one another at a plant in Detroit. The vehicles are expected to share a lot of their structure and powertrains. They’ll differ in features and styling. It’s expected that the Silverado EV won’t match the gargantuan 1,000-horsepower rating of the GMC Hummer’s trio of electric motors. GMC needs more than just boxy Hummer styling to ask upward of six figures for its new model, after all.
It’s safe to bet the GMC will be a version of the Silverado EV sold under the Sierra name. We should know more soon. See GMC models for sale
