Here Are 10 Ways to Buy Someone Else’s Project Car

Owning a project car can be a tough go, as many are given up on before they are completely finished. If you can find a well-done option on the used market, you can take over someone else’s project and save money, but be cautious — not all are created equal. Here are some cool modified cars I found here on Autotrader that don’t look too bad. They’ll range from mild to wild and from cheap to as much as a house.

2001 Acura Integra GS-R Hatchback

2001 Acura Integra GS-R Hatchback

The Acura Integra was a fantastic car, and I found this particular option in Saylorsburg, PA while researching another article titled "sport compacts that you can only buy used." I was looking for mostly stock examples of cool 1990s and 2000s sport compacts. This GS-R may look stock, but it has a turbocharger along with some other upgrades. It’s offered at just under $5,000 with a claimed $6,000 invested in modifications — so for someone who knows their way around a 1.8-liter Honda engine, this could be pretty great. 2003 Dodge SRT-4

2003 Dodge SRT-4

The Neon was a pretty basic car, but the SRT4 variant was pretty cool. What we have here is something completely different — you’re looking at wide-body with an unspecified amount of modifications. Unfortunately, the dealership in Naperville, IL only lists the basic standard features of a 2003 SRT4. Clearly, there is a lot more going on here. It’s offered for $13,999 if you’re feeling adventurous. Find a Dodge SRT-4 for sale

2018 Ford Focus ST Hatchback

2018 Ford Focus ST Hatchback

The Ford Focus is no more, and with it goes the excellent ST variant. I owned one and I loved it, and if you want one, you can still have it on the used market. The ST2 package gets you the amazing Recaro seats and some other bits, and that was the package I chose when I bought my 2014 new. But what if you want a bit more? This clean looking 2018 Focus ST comes to us from Austin, Texas, and it has a bevy of Mountune and Cobb upgrades. If it’s done well, the $24,484 price tag is pretty reasonable, especially considering the insanely low mileage of just 8,334. Find a Ford Focus for sale

2018 Volkswagen GTI 4-Door

2018 Volkswagen GTI 4-Door

If you’re more of a Volkswagen fan, there are quite a few modified GTI options for sale on Autotrader. This MK7.5 GTI comes to us from CNC Motors in Upland, CA. Its price tag of $39,999 is a bit steep, but the list of modifications is extensive. The listing starts with brakes and gets through suspension before running out of room in the description. Supposedly, it was built for some YouTube content, and I’ll admit I really like the way it looks. It’s up to you whether it’s worth almost $40,000. Find a Volkswagen GTI for sale

2014 Ford Fiesta ST

2014 Ford Fiesta ST

Have you ever watched Ken Block’s antics on YouTube and thought, I could do that? I know I have. Whether that’s the case or you just want a replica of one of his many cool Ford performance machines, check this out. While it’s still front-wheel drive, it’s built to replicate a Ford Fiesta R5 Rally Car, and it most certainly looks the part. A TON of work has been done to this car — way too much to list — as it was built for SEMA, after all. Replicating something like this would be massively expensive, so the $52,000 asking price from a private seller in Laguna Niguel, CA doesn’t seem that terrible. Will the seller get over $50K for this Fiesta ST? I hope so, because this is a cool car. Find a Ford Fiesta for sale

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

This 2003 Lancer Evolution has been prepped to dominate SCCA Autocross events. This generation’s Evo is already starting to escalate in value, so this isn’t even the most expensive option on Autotrader at $29,000! If you want a turn key race car, here you go. Find a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution for sale

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

If you’re a fan of Corvette racing, you’re probably familiar with "Jake," the skull mascot seen on all of their racing cars. He makes an appearance on this 2017 Grand Sport, but this one has been turned into a drag car. With a claimed 850 horsepower from the added supercharger, this $30,500 Corvette is a lot of C6 project for the money! Find a Chevrolet Corvette for sale

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe

Check this thing out, I love it! A GT350 is a pretty special car in and of itself, and they’re not cheap. But this heavily modified 2017 GT350 comes with a huge list of modifications. From the Vortech supercharger to the full race suspension, it’s pretty impressive for $69,996! I want it. Find a Ford Mustang for sale

2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition

2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition

We break the $100,000 barrier with this crazy insane 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition. With a list of modifications a mile long, and a claimed output of over 1,000 hp, this is pretty bananas. The Liberty Walk body kit is a nice touch, but all this will cost you $130,000 — about the price of a new GT-R. Find a Nissan GT-R for sale

2015 Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4

2015 Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4

That GT-R vs. this Huracan would be a race I’d like to see. This stage-3 twin turbo build from Underground Racing is said to make over 1,000 hp on pump gas and around 1,250 hp on race fuel. Head on down to Charlotte, NC if you’ve got $309,000 in your pocket for a project car — or a house. I kind of prefer the car though. Find a Lamborghini Huracan for sale
