The term "fast SUV" can seem like an oxymoron to some. But I’ve driven the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and it’s quite an experience — and it is, indeed, very fast. You can’t quite get those for a bargain price quite yet, but check out this list of five of the fastest SUVs you can buy, now available under $40,000.
I’ll start with the Trackhawk’s cousin, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. While it’s not quite Hellcat level, it’s still pretty impressive. I witnessed one just like this 2015 SRT do a 4-wheel burnout. Just in case the former owner (or owners in this case, there have been four) did something similar, you have the piece of mind of buying this one as a certified pre-owned Jeep! With 41,276 miles on the clock, it’s a pretty great deal at $39,974. So head over to check this one out in Salt Lake City if you’re interested in an attractive family SUV with a 475-horsepower 6.4-liter HEMI V8. Find a Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale
I’m not sure anyone does "crazy fast SUV" better than Mercedes-Benz. I found a ton of cool ML 63 AMG options under $40,000 — and this 2015 for sale at Hennessy Jaguar Land Rover Buckhead is just one example at a cool $39,900. With an eye-watering 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, this thing will haul more than just you and your stuff. Find a Mercedes-Benz M-Class for sale
This one is pretty exciting, I’ll admit. I wasn’t sure if I would find a decent Cayenne at this price, and not only did I find it, it’s certified! It’s the GTS model with the stupid cool Peridot Metallic paint color. You get a 4.8-liter V8 with 420 hp — so while it’s not the most powerful SUV on this list, it’s plenty quick. Sixty mph arrives in around 5.5 seconds and the extra GTS bits make for some amazing handling. So check out this CPO Cayenne at Leith Porsche in Cary, North Carolina, and find out what the fuss is all about. Find a Porsche Cayenne for sale
Say "aloha" to this pretty blue BMW X5 M, offered for sale in Hawaii. This comes in another great automotive color, Monte Carlo Blue Metallic, which looks quite good on the X5’s midsize SUV design. The X5 M is pretty darn quick, as it boasts a 555-hp 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 and all the BMW handling prowess that you’ve come to expect. This is a lot of SUV for the money — and while it’s not certified, it’s got a clear Carfax with two owners. Of course, both owners were in Hawaii, where the car still lives. So maybe build in some car shopping to your next trip to the island of Hawai’i (the big one at the bottom). Find a BMW X5 M for sale
Looking for something a little larger and brand new? Well, Dodge will sell you a V8 R/T Durango well under $40,000! I’ve driven an R/T Durango — and while it’s not quite as crazy as the SRT version (not available at this price point quite yet), it was still a lot of fun. Dodge knows how to make a rowdy vehicle, and driving a 3-row SUV with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is just that. It makes all the right noises and comes extremely well-equipped for the price. Plus, it’s brand new!
So there you are, some excellent fast SUVs for a pretty reasonable price. You can go for the wild highlighter yellow-green Cayenne, the awesome X5 M or anything in between. Just because you need an SUV doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Find a Dodge Durango for sale
