The letters GT are used in an enormous amount of car names. A stupid amount, really. In fact, there are only a few car companies out there in car-company world that haven't had some car or trim level dubbed GT. Soon, I'll do a post on this topic. Right now, I'm going to tell you what cars have the license plate GT across the country.

Here's the basic breakdown: There are three types of cars with the GT plate. First, there are Mustangs. The GT plate returns to a vehicle in 33 states, and it's on a Mustang in 10 of them. Fortunately, it's always on a Mustang GT. Top prize goes to Maine, where the GT plate is on a 1982 Mustang GT that appears to be a one-owner.

Another type of car with the GT plate: boring cars. In these states, I suspect the license plate is owned by someone named George Turner or Gabrielle Tellvoss, and they have no idea that their vanity plate would be sought after by a bunch of people in sports cars. Possibly the worst offender is in my own home state, Pennsylvania, where GT is registered to a Chevy Malibu Maxx. Can someone please ask Ms. Tellvoss to give up the plate to a Mercedes-AMG GT?

And then, we have the final group: cool cars. The GT plate is registered to an actual Ford GT in three states: Arkansas, Texas and Washington. It's on a Corvette in Florida, a Maserati Spyder in Maryland and a Bentley Continental GT in Oregon. The rarest car of them all? A 2002 Porsche 996 911 GT2 in Connecticut.

Actually, there's one other type of car the GT plate is on: cars that make you cringe. That honor goes to one lone state, Minnesota, where GT isn't on a Mustang GT, a Ford GT, an AMG GT, a Porsche 911 GT3, a Continental GT or a Carrera GT -- it's on a 2015 Dodge Dart GT. Let's hope they trade up soon.

Here's the full list to see what car has a GT plate in your state. And remember, even if it's not on the list, it might still be taken by a car that hails from the pre-1981 era when vehicle identification numbers weren't standardized at 17 digits.
