There are 33 vehicles across the country with the vanity license plate "BMW." Of those 33 vehicles, 22 are BMWs. The remaining 11 belong to people who chuckle to themselves as they go to sleep, proud of their own wit.

Yes, in our latest version of our every-so-often "what cars have certain vanity plates" feature, I've decided to tell you what cars have the vanity plate "BMW" across the country. And remember, even though a state isn't listed on here, the license plate could still be taken -- likely by a vehicle made before the arrival of the 17-digit VIN.

As I said, 22 of the 33 vehicles with the vanity plate "BMW" are actually BMWs. The best BMWs are in Ohio (a 2016 M6 Gran Coupe), West Virginia (a 2007 M Coupe) and County 22 in Wyoming, where "22-BMW" is registered to a one-owner 2003 BMW M5 with less than 30,000 miles on the odometer. Folks, that one's a keeper.

As for less-than-stellar BMW models, the owner of "BMW" in Kansas has a 2002 325Ci, while "BMW" in Michigan is on a 2000 328Ci. And in Alabama, "BMW" is registered to a 1999 Z3 with a meager 2.3-liter engine. Possibly the strangest on-BMW appearance of the "BMW" vanity plate is in Illinois, where it's on a 2015 X4 xDrive28i -- hardly the enthusiast's BMW of choice. And in four states -- Michigan, North Carolina, Texas and Utah -- "BMW" is registered to a BMW motorcycle.

But in 11 states -- Arizona, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Wisconsin -- "BMW" finds itself on... a non-BMW. What gives?

Of course, it could be initials. In Nebraska, for example, Barry Williams has probably had "BMW" on a Buick long before BMW ever started selling cars in this country. It could be the same story in Maine, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin -- where the plate is on a 2017 C300 -- I'm thinking someone just traded in a BMW for a Mercedes, and they haven't gotten new plates yet. And the Arizona "BMW" plate -- on a Ford E-Series van -- could possibly be a parts truck for a local BMW dealer.

Whatever the story, here are all the BMW vanity license plates across the country for your perusal:
