  • Honda's new HR-V crossover to appear at this year's LA Auto Show
  • Small crossover will slot below the CR-V in Honda's lineup
  • Aside from styling, other HR-V details are not yet known

The Honda HR-V will be at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show ahead of its U.S. debut this winter. Honda recently confirmed the crossover's upcoming presence in LA, but other details about pricing or equipment are unknown.

Designed to slot below the CR-V in Honda's growing lineup, the HR-V will ride on the same platform as the automaker's subcompact Fit hatchback. Already on sale in Japan, the HR-V features rounded styling, a small footprint and a sloping rear end. Inside, the cabin is almost exactly the same as the Fit's, using the same center control stack, steering wheel and gauge cluster.

What isn't known is what the HR-V will include under the hood. Although we expect it to offer the same 130-horsepower 1.5-liter engine as the Fit, other options may include the Civic's 143-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder or even the 185-hp 2.4-liter engine in the CR-V. It's also not known what transmission the HR-V will use, though our money is on a continuously variable transmission -- and possibly an available 6-speed manual transmission. Other HR-V unknowns include pricing, which will likely be far below the CR-V's $24,000 with shipping, and available equipment.

Fortunately, we won't need to wait long to have our HR-V-related questions answered, since this year's LA Auto Show is only a few weeks away.

What it means to you: The Honda HR-V will offer a more compact alternative to the brand's already-small CR-V crossover.
