Honda recently announced pricing for the all-electric Fit EV, which made its debut last week at the LA Auto Show. According to the automaker, the hatchback will start at $36,625 before destination when it debuts next summer in California and Oregon.

While the Fit EV's base price puts it on par with rivals like the Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric and Chevrolet Volt, Honda says the hatchback's high cost means initial marketing efforts will be focused on leasing. Honda says lease rates for the electric hatchback will start at just $399 per month for 36-month terms.

According to Honda, the Fit EV is capable of travelling up to 123 miles between charges, though the automaker expects its range to be EPA certified at 76 miles under typical city and highway driving cycles. Recharging the hatchback's powerplant, which consists of a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 92 kW electric motor, takes as little as three hours from a high-speed charging station.

"The Fit EV is the next critical step in Honda's portfolio approach to alternative-fueled vehicles," said John Mendel, Honda's executive vice president of sales, at the model's launch. "There is no other automaker on the planet whose spirit is more deeply invested in the effort to realize a cleaner, more energy-efficient and ultimately more sustainable transportation future than Honda."

Honda says the Fit EV will be limited to just 1,100 units, and that each will be painted in the striking Reflection Blue Pearl finish of the automaker's LA Auto Show display vehicle. After rolling out the Fit EV next summer in California and Oregon, Honda says it will expand the hatchback's market to six East Coast metro areas in early 2013.
