When it comes to the carmakers that are leading the battle for fuel efficiency, you might think of Honda, which introduced modern hybrid technology to the world. Or, you may think about Toyota’s popular 51 MPG Prius. But in terms of fuel-efficient cars sales this year, no one has sold more vehicles than Hyundai.

Hyundai recently announced that, so far in 2011, it has sold over 100,000 vehicles that achieve 40 MPG. That’s more than any other manufacturer this year. By comparison, Toyota’s single 40+ MPG vehicle, the Prius, has landed in only 66,000 driveways this year.

Hyundai calls its fuel economy strategy ‘4x40’, meaning the company will offer four different models that can get 40 MPG this year. The company said almost 30 percent of its sales are ‘4x40’ vehicles, and that number continues to grow.

At present, Hyundai only sells three of the four fuel-sipping models: the compact Elantra, the mid-size Sonata Hybrid and the newly redesigned Accent subcompact.

All three models are rated at 40 MPG on the highway but the Elantra achieves 29 in the city while the Accent and Sonata hybrid reach 30 and 35 city MPG respectively.

Later this fall, Hyundai is set to launch the all-new Veloster three-door coupe. The EPA has yet to release any official fuel economy numbers on the Veloster, but Hyundai plans to keep the car just as eco-friendly as the Accent, Elantra and Sonata hybrid.

Hyundai credits technology like direct injection and more efficient transmissions for downsizing the brand’s carbon footprint, and this is only the beginning of the brand’s green vehicles plans. The Korean automaker said it plans on averaging at least 50 MPG for its entire lineup by the year 2025.

Right now, the current Hyundai lineup averages out to just over 35 MPG.
