When the mail came on Friday, I started snickering. He he he. Then I opened the package and started snickering some more. He he he. Then I went outside and stuck my new license plate on my Dodge Viper, and my snickering turned into an all-out giggle fest. Pedestrians crossed the street so they didn't have to deal with the crazy guy laughing next to the Dodge Viper.

Here's what happened. A few weeks ago, when I registered my Dodge Viper, I got a "Conserve Wild Resources" license plate with a little river otter on it. I thought this was a nice touch, considering the Viper is approximately as friendly to the environment as a 1930s coal mine.

But then, a few days later, I was discussing this whole license-plate situation with my friend Matt, and he informed me that Pennsylvania has a "Teen Driver" license plate. So I checked the regulations, and I quickly discovered that you do not have to be a teen driver to get this license plate, just a regular person.

I knew what I had to do.

Eight weeks later, I'm driving around in a bright-blue Dodge Viper with a license plate that features a giant, red yield sign emblazoned with the words, "Teen driver -- please be courteous." I'm still giggling.

As it turns out, the "Teen Driver" license plate is something you have to request, which means it isn't automatically issued to teenagers. In fact, it even costs $20 extra, just so you can drive around and let people know you're an inexperienced driver. The result is they've only issued something like 50 of them -- 49 of which were presumably mailed to actual teen drivers, and then one to me, a 28-year-old who now giggles every time he looks at the back of his Dodge Viper.

Although I find all of this hilarious, you have to feel for those 49 teen drivers. They work hard, save up their money from the overnight shift at Jim's Pizza and Beef Jerky, get good grades, play on their high-school football team, go down the right path and finally get a driver's license, only to have their parents tell them, "No, Johnny! You're getting a 'Teen Driver' license plate, and that's final!"

They must feel so uncool. Me, I feel the exact opposite. And if you see me on the street, please be courteous.
