So I'm walking down the street the other day in Washington, D.C., and I come across this black Ford Excursion with black-tinted windows and giant steel push bars on the front and rear. Naturally, I did what any reasonable human would do: I ran a Carfax report on it, right then and there, from the license-plate number.

I often run Carfax reports on Ford Excursions as opposed to, say, Toyota Priuses, because the Excursion has a very specific ownership base. What I mean by this is that the Excursion is one of the few vehicles that can cart around many people, like a full-size SUV or a minivan, and tow heavy loads, like a heavy-duty pickup truck. So what usually happens with Excursions is that people buy them and hang on to them forever, since no good replacement vehicle has really surfaced.

And that's unquestionably the case here.

When the Carfax report came back, it revealed that this Excursion has been a one-owner example since it was purchased new in November 2001 -- and it also revealed that, over the last 15.5 years, it's traveled 603,000 miles. That's right: This Excursion has gone 603,000 miles in 15.5 years, for a total of just slightly under 40,000 miles a year on average.

So how does a car do 603,000 miles in 15 years? Well, 3 years after it was purchased, it had already traveled 100,000 miles. Service records reported to Carfax show the mileage has been added with relative uniformity and usually in the D.C. area, suggesting the owner isn't reserving the vehicle solely for long trips. With that said, there are a few out-of-town service records -- including one in Tennessee in 2010, in Kentucky in 2011 and in Illinois in 2013. So this Excursion has been around.

More interesting, however, is the cost of all this. Even equipped with its diesel-powered 7.3-liter V8, a Ford Excursion is possibly the least efficient vehicle I can imagine driving 603,000 miles -- and a rough calculation suggests the owner has spent about $150,000 on fuel over the past 15 years. That's $10,000 on fuel every single year. Nearly a thousand bucks a month.

I've run a lot of Carfax reports over the last 3 years, and I think this Excursion is the highest-mileage regular vehicle (as opposed to an 18-wheeler or a bus) I've ever seen on the road. Its 603,000 miles is truly amazing. Possibly more amazing is the fact that, when I saw it, it wasn't driving.
