I recently had a discussion with my friend Andrew, who drives an Infiniti G37 and is correct just often enough to be irksome. I told Andrew that I thought the Porsche Panamera was a hatchback. He insisted it was a sedan. This discussion probably took place at 1 a.m.

You've probably never really thought about this, but I'm going to make you think about it now because I want your opinion: Is the Porsche Panamera a hatchback or a sedan?

This all got started when I drove the Alfa Romeo Giulia a couple of weeks ago and discovered the Giulia is the fastest sedan around the Nurburgring except for the Porsche Panamera Turbo. Now, in my mind, this still makes the Giulia the fastest sedan around the Nurburgring, because the Panamera Turbo is a hatchback. Andrew did not see it that way.

I'll go into Andrew's argument in a minute, but mine is quite simple: The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a trunk with no window. The BMW 7 Series has a trunk with no window. The Lexus LS has a trunk with no window. The Porsche Panamera has a freakin' tailgate with a window and (in some cases) a windshield wiper. Folks, that's the mark of a hatchback!!!!

Think about it: What do you call the Volkswagen Golf, which has a tailgate with a window and a windshield wiper? That would be ... a hatchback. And what do you call the Volkswagen Jetta, which has a trunk with no window? That would be ... a sedan. I could go on for days here, but the thrust of my point is rather obvious: The Porsche Panamera is a freakin' hatchback.

The crazy thing is, nobody seems to realize it! Everyone goes around talking about how the Audi A7 is a "combination of a sedan and a coupe" or some other line, and yet people say the Porsche Panamera is just a sedan! It's like Porsche has snuck in a hatchback without telling anyone!

Andrew did not see it this way. Andrew first insisted the Panamera is a sedan because that's how they market it, but he later offered a better point: If my definition of hatchback is "tailgate with a window and a windshield wiper," then other hatchbacks include the Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Aston Martin DB9. This dramatically increases the average transaction price of a new hatchback.

So now I'm not really sure what to think, except that I really want Andrew to be wrong. What are your thoughts? Is the Porsche Panamera really a hatchback?
