In an effort to provide the most accurate used car values possible, Kelley Blue Book recently announced its value assessments will soon include data from 51 regions nationwide. According to Kelley Blue Book, the data will be updated weekly, and should allow the firm to provide some of the most comprehensive values available to consumers today.

While Kelley Blue Book did not specify which 51 regions would be considered, it's safe to say that the chosen areas are distinct enough to expose actual differences in used car values. For example, a four-wheel drive vehicle may be worth more in a mountainous or snowy area than in sunny southern California or Florida. While Kelley Blue Book's previous model showed no difference in price, it can now draw a distinction based on region.

"These game-changing enhancements in vehicle valuation allow automotive businesses to better manage a single vehicle or an entire portfolio of inventory more effectively and profitably than ever before," said Juan Flores, Kelley Blue Book's director of vehicle valuation. "The introduction of localized values for 51 specific regional markets not only echoes the pricing variations detected in each region by the company's statisticians and sophisticated valuation models, but reflects our desire to help consumers and businesses make better financial decisions."

According to Kelley Blue Book, the regional data will be computed weekly for all used car values including lending, auction, trade-in, private party, certified pre-owned and suggested retail. That means anyone looking to buy or sell a used vehicle can get pricing for a specific market in a specific week.

In addition to adding regional data to its used car valuations, Kelley Blue Book also announced another recent change to its used car evaluation process. While the firm formerly offered three possible conditions for a used vehicle - "Excellent," "Good," and "Poor," - KBB recently added a fourth condition, "Very Good," which slots between "Good" and "Excellent." According to KBB, just 3 percent of used cars are "Excellent," necessitating the extra choice for sellers with an above average car that's not quite perfect.
