The fully redesigned 2012 Kia Rio5 hatchback will start at just $14,350 including destination when it arrives in showrooms next month. The Rio5 was first shown at the New York International Auto Show in April.

According to Kia, $14,350 buys a base-level Rio5 LX with a six-speed manual transmission. Upgrading to the automaker's optional six-speed automatic brings the price up to $15,750 including destination, while the sporty Rio5 SX commands $18,750. While Kia didn't announce pricing for its mid-level EX trim, we estimate it to be around $17,500 with destination.

Those prices are in line with other compact hatchbacks like the Ford Fiesta, which ranges from $16,300 to $18,300 with destination, and the Toyota Yaris, which starts at just over $14,000. While Kia has not yet announced pricing for the Rio's more traditional four-door sedan variant, we expect it to start slightly below the hatchback, with base prices likely coming in just under $14,000 including destination.

In addition to announcing the 2012 Rio5's pricing, Kia also outlined the hatchback's equipment. Standard features include air conditioning, a CD player with USB and auxiliary ports, SiriusXM satellite radio with three months of free service, and several safety features including electronic stability control and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. The upscale Rio5 SX adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlight accents, a sport-tuned suspension and UVO, Kia's new Microsoft-based infotainment system that is similar to Ford's SYNC system.

The 2012 Rio also offers an exciting new fuel-saving technology as part of its fuel-saving $400 "Eco" package. Dubbed "start-stop," the feature conserves fuel by automatically shutting off the Rio's engine when stopped. While high-end automakers like BMW and Porsche have also recently adopted start-stop technology, the Rio will be the least expensive car to offer the feature. The result is an impressive EPA fuel rating of 31 miles per gallon in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway with start-stop, or 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway without it.

The subcompact Rio is the smallest, least-expensive model in Kia's lineup. Last month, the automaker sold just 658 Rios - a decline of nearly 70 percent compared to August 2010 - stressing the necessity of a more competitive new model.
