An all-new Lexus GS is on its way. The automaker recently announced a fully redesigned version of its sporty midsize sedan will be unveiled next month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, a world-renowned auto show famous for attracting high-dollar collector vehicles.

Lexus says that the GS, which will enter its fourth generation with the new model, has been reworked to introduce a design philosophy intended to inspire more emotion in car shoppers. While the automaker hasn't provided any teaser images of the new GS, which may debut as either a 2012 or 2013 model, Lexus says it will feature a distinctive new front grille and styling cues, which will eventually make their way to all of its vehicles.

"Our customers have been waiting for a new GS that's more intense in every way," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "They'll soon discover this GS was well worth the wait."

With a heavy focus on antique and vintage cars, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is an unusual place to unveil a new model. But with the world press - and many car enthusiasts - routinely present at the event, more automakers are turning to Pebble Beach to show off their latest designs. While the event has played host to unveilings by high-end automakers like Bentley and Ferrari, Infiniti has also recently turned to Pebble Beach to debut its vehicles, from the 2011 M37 and M56 at the 2009 event to the all-new JX crossover, which will be shown this year.

First sold in 1993, the Lexus GS was among the automaker's first vehicles to debut after the brand's launch in 1990. On sale since 2006, today's GS has seen sales decline in recent years. Last month, the GS sold just 310 units - a decrease of nearly 45 percent versus last June and far below rivals like the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class, whose monthly sales totals often top 4,000 units.
