Subaru will soon expand the Onyx Edition package currently available on the Outback to the larger Ascent 3-row SUV.
The automaker released a single teaser image on social media. Though accompanied by little information, the image shows a new Onyx Edition badge finished in — you guessed it — a dark chrome hue.
The Outback XT Onyx Edition is positioned as the least expensive way to get the 260-horsepower turbocharged engine in the automaker’s tall-wagon SUV. There, the package includes black wheels, darker chrome exterior trim, and special two-tone seats upholstered in a water-repellent synthetic material.
Just how closely the Ascent Onyx Edition will stick to this recipe is unclear. All Ascents feature the turbocharged engine that’s optional in the smaller Outback, but it’s safe to guess that the Onyx Edition will slot in somewhere between the Premium and Limited trim levels. That likely puts its price tag around $38,000.
The model will be the first special edition in the Ascent lineup, which hit the market for the 2019 model year. As the Ascent enters its fourth model year, it’s likely to receive a few more updates.
Subaru hasn’t said anything about an Ascent Wilderness Edition, though we can always cross our fingers for a more off-road-oriented model like the recently-released Outback Wilderness Edition.
