Volkswagen’s latest model is a hashtag. Officially dubbed the Volkswagen #PinkBeetle, the new special-edition model will reach dealers this fall in bright pink, in hatchback or convertible configurations, and, yes, with a pound sign in its name.
But before we get to that, let’s discuss the most obviously unique aspect of the #PinkBeetle: its exterior color. VW calls it “fresh fuchsia metallic,” and it’s exactly as bright as you’re probably thinking something called “#PinkBeetle” would be. Breaking up all the pink are black mirror caps, black running boards and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The pink continues on the inside, as the limited-production #PinkBeetle offers a black interior (thankfully), but with pink accents — such as pink stripes inserted into the plaid seat design and pink touches on the steering wheel and door panels. The #PinkBeetle also includes Volkswagen’s latest infotainment system with app connectivity.
And now, about that name: Volkswagen says the #PinkBeetle is both the car’s name and its hashtag, making it the first car ever to be named after its own hashtag. The automaker also says the #PinkBeetle will be an “instant social media influencer.” We’ll see if that’s true when the #PinkBeetle goes on sale this fall as a 2017 model.
