  • The new Mini Roadster will start at $25,050.
  • Three trim levels will be offered in the Roadster.
  • The Roadster features a manual top and just two seats.

Mini's sporty new Roadster will start at $25,050 including destination when it arrives at US dealers this spring. That's the latest from the automaker, who recently announced finalized pricing and trim levels for the hotly anticipated two-seat ragtop.

According to Mini, the base-level Cooper Roadster will be the line's value leader due to its $25,050 base price and 121-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. Consumers interested in a little more oomph can step up to the Cooper S Roadster, which starts at $28,050 and features a turbocharged version of the same engine good for a muscular 181 horsepower. The model's top-line trim level, the upscale John Cooper Works Roadster, is aimed at enthusiasts and offers a whopping 208 horsepower along with its steep $35,050 base price tag.

Mini says that a six-speed manual transmission is standard on all Cooper Roadsters, while base-level Cooper Roadster and sporty Cooper S Roadster models feature an optional six-speed automatic for an extra $1,250. The automaker also says the Roadster and Cooper S Roadster feature standard 16-inch alloy wheels, while the upscale John Cooper Works Roadster comes standard with 17-inch alloys.

Essentially a soft top version of the recently released Mini Coupe, the Mini Roadster is the second convertible in the automaker's lineup. But unlike the standard Cooper convertible, the Roadster offers only two seats instead of four and features a manually-operated top rather than an automated one. Buyers who give up the convenience of the power top and the added practicality of four seats will find the Roadster offers a far more engaging driving experience than its Cooper convertible stablemate, which is already well-regarded for its sporty on-road characteristics.

While the tiny Mini Roadster suffers from compromised cargo capacity due to its folding soft top, the automaker says the convertible includes a storage area behind its front seats and a novel pass-through to the trunk for larger items. Although Mini hasn't announced an official release date for the Roadster, we expect it go on sale sometime in the spring or early this summer.

What it means to you: Be prepared for another variation on Mini's wildly popular sporty small car theme.
