Mitsubishi is launching a new high-performance driving program designed to let drivers hone their skills on the racetrack. Put on by the automaker and Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, the advanced Lancer Evolution Experience 2 driving program begins later this month at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California.

Open to all graduates of Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution Experience 1, the $1,495 program will include more track time than its predecessor, specifically emphasizing timed competition. The program's featured vehicle will be Mitsubishi's high-performance Lancer Evolution X, specifically prepared for track time with a fully-integrated roll cage, Sparco racing seats and a racing harness.

According to Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, participants will first brush up on driving dynamics in a classroom before heading out for a few warm-up laps. Drivers are then coached on how to improve lap times before track configurations are changed, teaching them to adapt to new settings and corners.

With teaching and coaching out of the way, drivers will then be timed around Infineon's "Time Attack" course. According to Mitsubishi, the fastest driver from each session will be invited back to compete in the Lancer Evolution Challenge Run-Off at the end of the summer. There, the program's top drivers will once again face off against the clock, with the overall winner scoring free use of a Mitsubishi vehicle for a full year.

The Lancer Evolution X is the tenth incarnation of Mitsubishi's enthusiast-oriented Lancer Evolution, which debuted in Japan nearly 20 years ago. First sold in the United States in 2003 as the Lancer Evolution VIII, Mitsubishi's high-performance compact sedan has gained a cult following for its spirited acceleration, all-wheel drive grip and expressive styling.
