New Nissan Pickup Teased Ahead of Official Unveiling

  • New Nissan pickup teased in photo from the automaker
  • Truck will likely replace the brand’s aging Frontier
  • Photo shows truck’s size, LED lights, little else

Nissan has revealed a teaser photo of its latest pickup truck ahead of the truck’s official unveiling later this month. The photo — which shows the pickup under a sheet, exposing its grille and LED lights — appears to feature a new midsize truck that’s likely slated to replace the brand’s aging Frontier.

Although the teaser photo doesn’t show much, it reveals a few important details about Nissan’s latest pickup. For one, the truck will have LED running lights, which is hardly a surprise given the increasing popularity of LED lighting over the last few years. The LED light design is similar to several other Nissan vehicles, including the brand’s newly redesigned Pathfinder SUV.

Another detail revealed in Nissan’s teaser photo is the new pickup’s size. While it’s not entirely clear in the picture, the size appears to be similar to a midsize truck — like Nissan’s current Frontier. The Frontier is long overdue for an update, as the current model has seen few revisions since it went on sale for the 2005 model year. As a result, we suspect that the pickup hiding under the sheet is an updated Frontier.

What else can we tell from Nissan’s teaser image? For one thing, we get a preview of the truck’s front-end styling. Aside from the truck’s LED lights, the teaser photo shows off the pickup’s brawny front grille, which has a lot in common with the current Frontier’s look. That may mean Nissan’s next pickup is just a face-lifted version of the Frontier rather than a fully redesigned truck.

Either way, we’ll know more details later this month, as Nissan plans to pull the cover off its newest pickup soon. When it’s released, the new Nissan will face competition from the Toyota Tacoma — a midsize-pickup mainstay — and the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon from General Motors.

What it means to you: The next Nissan pickup will likely help the automaker stay competitive against all-new rivals from General Motors.
