Nissan’s officially rolled out an all-new, high-performance version of its compact Sentra sedan. Dubbed the 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo, the new model boasts more power than the standard Sentra along with a few upgrades, including an available 6-speed manual transmission. The biggest change is under the hood, where the Nissan Sentra touts a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which makes 188 horsepower, an increase of 58 hp over last year’s base-level Sentra that used a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder. Torque is also boosted dramatically, as the Sentra SR Turbo will offer 177 lb-ft, an increase of 49 over last year’s Sentra.
Beyond the increased power, the Sentra SR Turbo also touts an available 6-speed manual transmission, which Nissan previously confined to its base-level Sentra S models. Unlike other sporty compacts such as the Ford Focus ST and Honda Civic Si, drivers who don’t want the 6-speed can still choose an automatic: in this case, a continuously variable transmission Nissan’s dubbed the XTRONIC.
Other additions to the Sentra SR Turbo are relatively small and include unique rocker panels, a chrome exhaust tip, 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Nissan says the Sentra SR Turbo will go on sale in October, and although the automaker hasn’t yet announced pricing, we expect it to start around $23,000 when it reaches dealers.
