  • The "Scratch Shield" can self-heal small scratches in as little as an hour
  • Nissan's new iPhone case is in Beta testing right now

When you think of things like adaptive radar cruise control, internet radio, lane keep assist, active noise cancellation and other such next generation technologies, it's clear that modern cars benefit from external developments. On the other hand, it's generally rare that technology developed specifically for cars finds a use outside of the car world.

Yet, as they say, you can't keep a good idea down-and Nissan's self-healing paint tech is a superb example of that.

With a consistency somewhere between a solid and a gel, Nissan's "Scratch Shield" paint can self-heal even large scratches by "oozing" to fill them in. This feat is made possible because the "paint"-made from something called polyrotaxane-never completely dries, although it won't rub off or stain either. Small scratches can close up in about an hour, but larger ones can take up to a week.

Although it has been available on Nissan vehicles since 2006, the new iPhone case is the first migration of it outside of the car world. Nissan says their cases have several benefits over traditional cases aside from the self-healing aspect: the tactile gel-like surface is inherently more scratch resistant and provides better grip; and the case is made from automotive grade ABS plastic which means it can absorb shocks better.

"We like to think laterally by taking the great innovations we've got from an automotive point of view, and looking at how they could be applied to improve everyday issues," said Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director Business Development for Nissan in Europe. "The Scratch Shield iPhone case is a great example of us taking a Nissan automotive technology that has had a huge impact for our customers, and then shifting the boundaries to apply it to another everyday product."

Right now the case is in early Beta testing with a select group of journalists and consumers, but if things go as Nissan expects the case will be available for general public purchase later in 2012. Although Nissan doesn't specifically spell it out, it's very possible that the case will also allow you to color coordinate with your car.

What it means to you: If things go to plan, expect to see self-healing Nissan iPhone cases available within the year-with the potential to color coordinate with your car.
