In the past, you had to buy a General Motors vehicle to get the benefits of OnStar, the automaker's subscription-based telematics system. But beginning July 24, you can now purchase the system for $374.99, including installation at your local Best Buy.

Called OnStar FMV - or "For My Vehicle" - the system will allow drivers of up to 90 million older vehicles to take advantage of OnStar's safety, security and informational services by replacing their current rearview mirror with a new, OnStar-equipped version. Service plans for the system, which can be installed on-site by one of Best Buy's 1,400 mobile electronics certified professionals, start at $18.95 a month, or $199 a year.

"The wait is over," said OnStar president Linda Marshall. "Since we announced OnStar FMV at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, thousands of people have signed up to be notified when this innovative product is ready to buy. Now, through Best Buy, they can enhance their Fords, Toyotas, Chryslers and other brands with the power of OnStar."

OnStar FMV offers many of the same features as the OnStar service found in many Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. Such benefits include automatic crash response, which connects vehicles to trained OnStar professionals the event of an accident, turn-by-turn navigation, which allows drivers to ask advisors for directions to a specific address or location, stolen vehicle location assistance, which uses GPS tracking to provide a stolen car's location to law enforcement, and hands-free calling.

Unfortunately, OnStar FMV won't offer one of the system's hallmark benefits: remote door unlocking. Because OnStar's popular remote door unlocking feature was designed to work specifically with General Motors vehicles, the feature couldn't be retooled to work with other manufacturers' cars and trucks. Undoubtedly, General Motors dealerships won't mind the feature's exclusion, as it still provides the automaker's OnStar-equipped models with an exclusive perk.

According to OnStar, the OnStar FMV system will soon be made available at other retailers including Car Toys, Crutchfield, Fry's Electronics, Al and Ed's Autosound and PC Richard and Son.
