Good news if you’ve been dreaming of getting into Porsche’s all-electric sports sedan, the Taycan: It can now be had for some $20,000 less. The less-good news is that it’s still out of the reach of many with a roughly $80,000 starting price. But hey, this is Porsche we are talking about — maker of some of the finest German sports cars and crossovers in the world.
As a refresher, the Porsche Taycan is a sumptuous, fast and luxurious sports sedan. It just debuted last year. The Taycan also happens to be Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle and a rival to the Tesla Model S.
The first two models that arrived, the Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo, start at $103,800 and $150,900, respectively. The new model, simply called the Taycan, starts at $79,900, plus $1,350 destination fee. As an all-electric car, it’s also eligible for the $7,500 federal tax incentive.
One of the biggest differences between this Taycan and the other is that it is rear-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive. That saves cost as well as weight. Porsche says removing the front power unit saves about 200 pounds. Less weight in a car is usually a good thing and means better efficiency. This is even more important in an all-electric car that requires rechargeable batteries to run.
The Taycan will be available with a choice of two battery configurations. Standard is the Performance Battery, and optional is the Performance Battery Plus that has more power and should also mean more range.
Porsche Taycan range
Speaking of, the new Porsche Taycan’s is still to be announced. For at least a vague idea, the Taycan 4S is rated up to 227 miles. That trails a 2021 Model S Performance’s range of 387 miles. And it should be noted that Porsche advises that a third party agency was able to get up to 278 miles of range out of a Taycan Turbo S.
Porsche also says the Taycan will do 0-60 mph in as little as 5.1 seconds. (The priciest model does that feat in 2.6 seconds.)
Beyond the speed, power (402 or 469 horsepower depending on battery) and panache of it being a Porsche, even this least-expensive Taycan comes loaded with a stunning and tech-centric interior with multiple digital screens and premium amenities. You also get three years of free Electrify America charging. And like other Porsches, the Taycan can be optioned with a bevy of sweet features that range from 14-way power front seats with massage function to a Burmester ultra high-end audio system.
This new base Taycan is available for order now and is expected to arrive in dealerships this spring.
