This classic SUV is ageless and a strong peformer.

If there's one name most closely associated with the current popularity of sport-utility vehicles, it has to be Jeep. Although the company did not exactly invent the category, it certainly went a long way to popularize it with the introduction of the Cherokee back in 1984. The Grand Cherokee was originally introduced as a replacement model for the Cherokee in 1993, but continued demand for the original Cherokee was so high that Chrysler kept it going as its entry-level model.

Unlike a lot of frame-based SUVs, the Grand Cherokee has unibody construction, which helps make it more rigid for a better ride and less likelihood of squeaks and rattles. Grand Cherokee is available in a variety of combinations of rear- or four-wheel-drive, with part-time as well as full-time 4WD options. Base models come with a powerful six-cylinder engine while an optional V-8 powers a more upmarket version.

The Grand Cherokee has been continuously improved each year culminating in a revamped version for 1999. It keeps the familiar Grand Cherokee look and uses the same platform. Fortunately this means that a pre-owned Grand Cherokee still remains a good buy for those who want a decent-looking SUV with a car-like ride, but still tough enough for off-road driving.

1. Pre-owned Vehicle Review (1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo)

My Likes: rugged classic looks, full-time all-wheel drive option

Dislikes: old-style dashboard, rear window doesn't lift, spare tire storage

When I first saw this Grand Cherokee, I thought it was a brand-new model. But it wasn't. It's a 1993 model, which was the first year the vehicle was introduced. It's a compliment to the original designers who came up with a look strong enough to remain a "classic" five years later.

This particular model had 84,000 miles on it, which is about 14,000 miles above average for its age. Despite this, the vehicle had obviously been treated well. Even the cladding on the bodywork was still free of nicks. There was no sign of wear in the seats. Apparently, the original owner had covered them to protect the surface.

The vehicle was free of squeaks and rattles. The only major documented problem was replacement of the differential at about 82,000 miles. There was no discernible slack or wear in the transmission or steering. It reminded me that Jeep is a leader with long experience in designing and building SUVs. This Laredo model had the optional part-time 4WD system for off-road use only. A lever on the left side of the center console is used to shift from 2WD to part-time and locked 4WD.

There are two bucket seats up front and three people can fit in the back, though it's a bit of a squeeze for three adults. There is a decent amount of space behind the rear seat but the full-size spare tire takes up too much room. Unlike most SUVs where the spare is located under the body or on the tailgate, Jeep chose to place it inside the cargo area. There is no factory option to put it outside on the tailgate. Tailgate mounting is desirable for saving space but not as convenient for access. Another complaint is the lack of an opening window in the tailgate. It's really advantageous to be able to open just the window to place small objects in the back.

Ride comfort is considerably better than in the regular Cherokee and it's more car-like than some other SUVs. A major reason for this is the frame design, which utilizes a unibody construction, the same as for most cars. Most other SUVs rely on the very rigid ladder frame, which was derived from their pickup truck heritage.

Performance from the 4.0-liter, straight-six engine is quite good though not up to par with a newer Grand Cherokee with an optional V-8 engine. On the other hand, unless you're towing a trailer, the better fuel economy more than makes up for any power deficiency.

I was pleasantly surprised to find how well this relatively old Grand Cherokee operated. Some reviews have indicated that early models were prone to trouble. With this particular vehicle, that was not the case.

3. History of Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee was first introduced in January 1992 as a 1993 model year vehicle. It was initially intended to be a replacement for the slightly smaller Cherokee. Production was moved from Ohio to a completely rebuilt factory in Detroit. However, continued demand for the old Cherokee encouraged Chrysler to keep the standard Cherokee model on the market indefinitely.

The Grand Cherokee was an instant hit, winning Motor Trend's Truck of the Year contest in 1992. After four years of production, the one-millionth Grand Cherokee was produced in 1996 making it the second most popular SUV on the market.

In addition to a number of new technologies, Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first sport-utility vehicle to be equipped with a driver-side airbag. The Grand Cherokee set a trend for luxury sport-utility vehicles with its comfort and handling. It offered customers the amenities they would expect to find in a luxury car in a vehicle that had all the utility and capability of a Jeep.

Grand Cherokee also set the benchmark in occupant protection with its standard driver-side airbag, standard four-wheel, anti-lock brake system, and front and rear door beams.

To channel power where it's needed, Jeep Grand Cherokee has offered a selection of three transfer-cases over the years. A "Command-Trac" system allows drivers to switch from normal two-wheel drive mode to part-time, four-wheel drive for off-highway use and for when weather conditions demand. This was standard in 1993 and 1994. A "Selec-Trac" system which has all the features of the Command-Trac plus a full-time, four-wheel drive mode that lets you drive in four-wheel drive on both dry and slippery surfaces and a "Quadra-Trac" all-time, four-wheel drive system that automatically adjusts to changing road conditions are the other options. This system has always been standard on the V-8 four-wheel drive models.

For one year, a top-of-the-line model debuted in 1998 powered by a 245 horsepower 5.9-liter V-8 engine. The 5.9 Limited features an all-leather interior and many luxury features that befit its upscale image.

An all-new Grand Cherokee in 1999 sees more changes than in any previous year. It has a completely new body that maintains the family resemblance. Underneath it remains on the same floorpan with the same wheelbase. However the body is four inches longer and two inches taller. Overall it has much rounder look than before and with a much more sloping windshield there's even a hint of the famous Chrysler cab-forward look.

The 1999 Grand Cherokee has a choice of two engines. The base 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine has been improved which results in a modest increase of five horsepower. The optional V-8 is a new overhead cam engine that produces 230 horsepower -- an increase of 10 horsepower over the old V-8 -- despite the engine's capacity dropping from 5.2 liters to 4.7 liters. They both offer better fuel economy as well as well as being smoother and quieter.

On the drivetrain front, the V-8 gets a more refined automatic transmission with an extra gear for smoother shifting. The regular variety of 4WD systems continue with the addition of one new option that utilizes a new differential system being used for the first time on a passenger vehicle. The new Quadra-Drive system features permanently engaged 4WD which can send all of the engine's power to any wheel to maintain traction.

4. Review of Current Grand Cherokee

The 1999 Grand Cherokee is much more refined with a quieter interior thanks to a smoother engine and transmission. Despite this I still found the transmission to be noisier than I would expect, especially when 4WD is engaged. Power output from the base six-cylinder engine has been upped by about five horsepower, not enough to notice any appreciable change in performance. It is still plenty powerful -- if you don't mind revving the engine to get maximum performance for overtaking and accelerating on to a freeway.

A major criticism of older Grand Cherokee has been the dated interior design. Jeep took this to heart as the new interior on the 1999 model is vastly improved. It still maintains a truck feel to it but it is ergonomically better and has smoother edges. Interior passenger and cargo space is slightly better than before.

Chrysler obviously listened to customer complaints about the old Grand Cherokee as it has moved the spare tire from inside the cargo area to underneath the rear floor. Also, for the first time the rear glass in the tailgate can be opened, which is convenient for placing small objects in the back without having to open the tailgate. The opening is pretty small compared to the size of the rear window as the hidden tailgate structure is beefy. Some of the plastic trim felt cheap and the maze of cables and pipes under the hood seemed incongruous on a $35,000 luxury SUV.

I test drove a Limited model with the Selec-Trac 4WD system. It is still too crude for my liking as the lever requires a lot of force for shifting it into 4WD and then it alters the handling and increases the mechanical noise level unduly. I would like to try the new Quadra-Drive permanently-engaged 4WD system. I am a firm believer in permanent 4WD systems as they offer the safety benefits of all-wheel-drive at all times. I think it's a shame Jeep doesn't offer this as a standard feature as do an increasing number of SUVs.

All in all, though, the new Grand Cherokee is a welcome improvement especially in looks over the old model which was beginning to show signs of its age in this competitive market.
