There was a time not long ago when Suzuki had grand plans of market share in the U.S. They had a small car called the Kizashi. They had a smaller car called the SX4. They had an SUV called the XL-7. And they decided: You know what we need to succeed in the American market? A pickup truck. So they got one.

Of course, engineering a pickup truck to compete with all the trucks available in the United States is very difficult, so Suzuki went a slightly easier route. They called up Nissan and asked if they could slap a Suzuki badge on the midsize Nissan Frontier pickup. And so the Suzuki Equator was born.

That's right: Suzuki sold a pickup in the United States, and it was called the Equator. You've probably never seen one, but they're out there roaming the streets, with a giant S where the Nissan logo should be. Surprisingly, it lasted for 4 years -- 2009 through 2012 -- with mostly the same model range as the Frontier, including an extended cab, a crew cab and a choice between 4-cylinder and V6 engines. There were two trim levels: the base-level Equator and the upscale one, inexplicably called the Equator RMZ. The RMZ offered a navigation system; it was a removable Garmin.

Of course, Suzuki didn't sell too many Equators. There are currently only 28 listed on all of Autotrader, compared to 1,509 listings for 2009-2012 Frontiers. But if you're ever looking for a used Frontier and aren't finding a good deal, you might want to search for an Equator instead. Given the fact that most people don't even know they exist, we suspect most dealers will probably offer a pretty good deal.
