Only a few years ago we'd have likely steered you away from Chrysler vehicles like the Sebring, Jeep Patriot and Dodge Grand Caravan. That's because Chrysler typically loaded its vehicles with great ideas and thoughtful features, but it frequently fell short when it came to execution.

Today it's an entirely different story, and nowhere is this more obvious than in cars like the Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200, Dodge Grand Caravan and Dodge Journey. Thankfully the innovative spirit is still there, but now the cars have a look and feel that's more on par with their largely Japanese competition.

Dodge Journey

The 2012 Dodge Journey is probably the sum of all Chrysler can do right when it comes to building compelling family cars. The Crew model isn't the top-of-the-line model, but it's so generously appointed that you'll think it is.

The Journey Crew comes with a 3.6-liter V6 (likely the best V6 Chrysler has ever built), 19-inch wheels and fog lights. Inside there's a large color touchscreen display and satellite radio, plus really handy storage bins in the floor and under the passenger's seat. The rear seats can also include integrated child booster seats.

Ultimately, the Dodge Journey comes off about as well put together as a Volvo, but for just under $30,000, it's clearly a Dodge price.

Chrysler 300

It's a similar story with the revamped Chrysler 300. The exterior now has the kind of nuanced styling details that make it look like a proper luxury car. Likewise, the interior is elegant in a way the previous 300 wasn't. With soft-touch materials, metallic trim and glowing blue gauges, the cabin looks like that of a $50,000 European luxury sedan.

The 300's sleek and powerful V6, comfortable ride and confident handling effectively back up the car's cool new look. The reworked Chrysler 300 is so good it just might forever change perceptions about Chrysler as a whole.

Chrysler 200

While the Chrysler 300 is changing perceptions at the country club, the Chrysler 200 is doing the same thing at your local apartment complex. Though technically a heavily revised Chrysler Sebring, the 200 is now everything the Sebring never was and never could be. Revised suspension, recalibrated steering, lots of standard features and decent cabin materials will take many shoppers by surprise given the 200's sub-$20,000 base price.

Granted, the 200 still has some Sebring-like qualities and isn't nearly as stunning as the 300. However, the 200 is a car that will give sedan buyers a little taste of the luxury car experience they might not otherwise be able to afford.

Chrysler and Dodge Minivans

When the Dodge Caravan debuted decades ago, it essentially invented an entire class of family car. Over time, competitors have outclassed the Grand Caravan time and time again. Still, with features like satellite TV, fold-flat seats for all rows and power third-row seats, the Grand Caravan kept it's pioneering edge.

Sadly, the materials often felt flimsy and the ride was less than inspiring. With a redesign in 2011, Dodge reworked the Grand Caravan to such a high degree that most of the previous van's low points have been eliminated. The aggressive new look, more refined driving dynamics and quieter interior mean Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey shoppers might want to give both the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country a second look.

For a few years now, we've lauded the improved quality and cutting-edge innovation of American brands like Buick, Chevrolet, Ford and Lincoln, but Chrysler and Dodge vehicles didn't make the transition as quickly. Thankfully that's changing, and that increased competition means consumers ultimately benefit in their quest for the best car at the lowest price.

You might have permanently marked Chrysler vehicles off your shopping list, and we can't blame you. However with freshly redesigned vehicles like the Chrysler 300, Dodge Journey and Dodge Grand Caravan, you might want to reconsider.
