  • Nissan's popular IDx Concept will make production
  • The sporty coupe made a huge splash at the Tokyo Motor Show
  • Nissan hasn't announced engine specs or a production time frame

After making a huge splash at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, the retro-themed Nissan IDx Concept is going into production. That's the latest from Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer, who recently confirmed that Nissan plans to build the sporty concept car.

While Palmer didn't announce details or a time frame for production, most car enthusiasts are surely excited about the upcoming addition to Nissan's lineup. The concept boasted exciting retro styling, rear-wheel drive for excellent handling and the promise of serious high-performance fun.

Unfortunately, we're not sure how much performance to expect. While Nissan says they could see a small 1.2-liter engine powering the IDx, we think enthusiasts will clamor for a larger powertrain. In fact, we expect the IDx to provide strong competition to the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, both of which use a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.

We're also not sure what the IDx will look like when it reaches Nissan dealers. The concept model included several similarities to the 1970s' Datsun 510, including slab-sided styling and a short trunk lid. We'd expect some of those cues to carry over to the finished IDx, though many details -- such as the concept model's unique headlights and sharp edges -- likely won't make production.

So when should we expect the IDx in showrooms? We're not sure about that, either. But if you're in the market today, we wouldn't suggest holding your breath. It can take years to develop a car, and it's likely that Nissan isn't very far along in the process. Still, we'll keep you posted on any updates as the IDx comes closer to reaching production.

What it means to you: After a strong reception in Tokyo, the Nissan IDx Concept is headed for dealers -- though it could take awhile.
