Although Subaru's sporty BRZ coupe has yet to hit the streets, the automaker is already planning to show off a high-performance STI version at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

Officially called the BRZ Concept STI, the high-performance sports car will likely represent the ultimate iteration of the automaker's upcoming BRZ coupe, just as the WRX STI represents the fastest, most powerful model in the Impreza lineup. STI, which stands for "Subaru Technica International," serves as the automaker's performance brand, much like BMW's sporty "M" division and Mercedes' in-house AMG tuning arm.

Interestingly, the BRZ Concept STI's Los Angeles debut marks one of the first showings of any BRZ model at a major auto show. While many industry insiders expected the coupe to appear at the Frankfurt show in September, Subaru instead revealed a see-through version of the car with transparent body panels designed to show off its powertrain and inner workings.

But showing off the BRZ's powertrain is a big deal for Subaru. That's because the sporty coupe doesn't feature all-wheel drive like other Subarus, but instead uses a rear-wheel drive system designed with help from Toyota.  In fact, the BRZ represents a joint effort between Subaru and Toyota, who will show its version of the sporty coupe - dubbed FT-86 - at the Tokyo Auto Show in December.

While details on the BRZ remain forthcoming, we expect the standard model to feature a 2.0-liter Subaru boxer four-cylinder pushing around 200 horsepower. That means in the likely event that the BRZ Concept STI becomes a reality, horsepower will likely hover around 300 thanks to turbocharging, which Subaru has used religiously in its high-performance Impreza models.

Undoubtedly, we'll find out more about the BRZ Concept STI when the cover is officially pulled off at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.
