75 automotive journalists scored more than 60 pickup trucks, SUVs and crossovers over two full days of driving to name the 2018 Ford F-150 the 2018 Truck of Texas. Members of the Texas Automotive Writers Association (TAWA) serve as the jury for what is among the more coveted awards a truck manufacturer can earn: Truck of Texas.
With Texas being the world’s largest truck market, it seems only fitting that the year’s most important truck competition take place there. Located to the west of Austin, the Longhorn River Ranch in Dripping Springs has hosted the event for two years running.
Presented by the Steel Market Development Institute, this year’s Truck Rodeo consisted of both street courses and several off-road courses of increasing degrees of difficulty. Journalists rated each vehicle in several categories, including performance, styling, interior design, personal appeal and so forth. The Ford F-150 was pushed over the finish line by Raptor, its uber-performance model.
Often separated by mere tenths of a point, winners were chosen for each of 21 vehicle segments. Other winners included the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport for CUV of Texas and the 2018 Volvo XC60 as the SUV of Texas. Ram was the most-awarded brand, hauling in wins in five categories with Mazda CX9, CX5 and CX3 sweeping the non-luxury SUV categories.
TAWA celebrates its 30th anniversary this year that also marks the 25th year for the Texas Truck Rodeo.
