The 2017 Honda Civic hatchback has finally been revealed, and it'll reach dealers this fall to do battle with the Mazda3 hatchback, the Ford Focus hatchback, the Volkswagen Golf and others.

The all-new Civic hatchback's lineup will consist of five trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L and Sport Touring. The LX, EX and EX-L models will use the same 174-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that's available in the Civic sedan, while the Sport and Sport Touring will produce 180 hp. Sport and Sport Touring models will also include a high-flow center exhaust.

As for transmission, Honda is offering a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) on all trims, but drivers who want a 6-speed manual can get one. Unfortunately, the 3-pedal setup is only available on LX, Sport and EX trims, meaning manual lovers will miss out on high-end goodies from the EX-L and Sport Touring models. Honda is anticipating that fuel economy will reach as high as 31 miles per gallon in the city and 40 mpg on the highway with the CVT, a figure that rivals -- but doesn't beat -- the Mazda3 hatchback's 30 mpg city/41 mpg hwy with its automatic transmission.

Like in many modern Honda models, safety features abound. The Civic hatchback will offer the Honda Sensing package, which includes lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic forward-collision braking. The Civic hatchback will also offer a remote engine starter, heated rear seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Meanwhile, if 180 hp isn't enough, Honda has some good news: The Civic hatchback will serve as the basis for the radical new Civic Type R, which will launch in the U.S. next year to rival hot hatches such as the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R.

Honda has not yet announced pricing for the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback, though we suspect it'll carry a premium of about $1,000 over the Civic sedan -- a figure that places LX models just over $20,000, with EX versions closer to $23,000.
