Here's something you didn't know: The vehicle you know as the Chevy Captiva Sport -- which was only offered to rental car companies, all of whom accessorize it with bar codes in the window and Nevada license plates -- was sold in the Middle East as the GMC Terrain. Yes, the GMC Terrain you know and love, with the squared-off wheel arches, is not the original GMC Terrain. The original GMC Terrain was a rebadged Saturn Vue.

Not in America, of course. In America, the Terrain began its life for the 2010 model year, squared-off wheel arches and all. But I was cruising along in Dubai a few weeks ago, and I got up behind this Saturn Vue/Chevy Captiva Sport, and I was shocked to see it had a GMC badge. I was even more shocked to see it has a GMC Terrain badge. In other words, while General Motors was selling the GMC Terrain in the United States alongside the Chevy Captiva Sport, they were selling the Chevy Captiva Sport in the Middle East as the GMC Terrain. Life at General Motors must be very complicated.

Anyway, I found this a little interesting -- and if you're a very geeky car geek, you probably will, too. Interesting, as I alluded to before, is that this wasn't the only rebadge for this vehicle: It was initially sold as the Saturn Vue, until Saturn went bust and GM decided to roll it back out as a Chevy. It was also sold as the Opel Antara (mainland Europe), the Vauxhall Antara (the U.K. and Ireland), the Holden Captiva 5 (Australia) and my personal favorite: In Korea, it was called the Daewoo Winstorm MaXX. Yes, with the Xs capitalized like that. Yes, "Winstorm," and not "Windstorm." This seems bizarre to me, but I suppose General Motors must know the Korean market's naming preferences much better than I do.

I'm disappointed, by the way, to report that the Captiva is officially gone from the U.S. market, meaning it's only left on sale in Latin America, where it'll soon be replaced by the Chevy Equinox. Goodbye, dearly rebadged GM small SUV. I only just discovered you were called the GMC Terrain in the Middle East, and now you're already leaving us.
