Searching for a family car that's actually interesting can be a challenging task. Granted, today's family cars are better than they've ever been, but the most sensible choice usually isn't the most exciting option. You have perennial candidates like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord sedans, crossovers like the Chevy Equinox and Jeep Cherokee, or the ultimate family vehicle: a minivan like a Chrysler Pacifica or Honda Odyssey.

But all of those vehicles are a dime a dozen. Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Do you want to bring something to the PTA meeting that no other parents will be driving? If so, then you should definitely check out the Ford Transit Connect.

I know what you're thinking: Isn't that a commercial van for businesses? Primarily, yes, but there's a passenger wagon version with a bunch of seats that any mom or dad who wants a weird car can buy for hauling their family around. This quirky, weird-shaped van has room for up to seven passengers, plus cargo space to boot.

You might think, since this is primarily a commercial van, that it's lacking in creature comforts you'd expect from a similar minivan. Luckily for you, you'd be mistaken. The range-topping Ford Transit Connect Titanium comes loaded with features like leather seats which are heated in front, tri-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a rearview camera -- and it's available with the SYNC 3 infotainment system, which adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It's not the most luxurious family vehicle -- but when optioned right, it's a respectably comfortable, high-tech way to get around.

So, what makes the Ford Transit Connect a good family car? On top of generous interior space, it gives you the joy of sliding doors. In other words, if you want the parking lot convenience of sliding doors while avoiding a traditional minivan, this is the van for you. The Transit Connect is also good on gas, as the fuel economy rating is 19 miles per gallon city and 27 mpg highway -- identical to the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

The current (second) generation of the Transit Connect has been available in the U.S. since the 2014 model year, which means they're growing in abundance and shrinking in price on the used market. A used, mid-range XLT model can be had fairly easily for under $20,000, but it's going to take some more digging to find one in the fancy Titanium trim. But when you do find one, those, too, are fairly affordable, as they're available for well under $30,000.

If you've been hesitating to replace your fun car with something more family-friendly, a Ford Transit Connect can be the best of both worlds: it serves up its share of weirdness while simultaneously being genuinely practical for everyday family hauling.
