Although I'm certain you come to Oversteer for the car reviews and the brilliant automotive opinions, let's be honest: You stay for the minutiae. And today, I'm bringing you maybe the most interesting minutiae you could possibly fathom: Information about rear headrests from a luxury SUV that hasn't been on sale for nearly 15 years.

The SUV in question is the Land Rover Discovery, or more specifically the Discovery II, which was available from 1998 to 2004. The Discovery II was the second-generation Discovery, although it was no more reliable than the original Discovery, in the sense that its head gaskets may torpedo the engine at any time, and also there might be more water collected inside the dome light than in some small ponds.

And the minutiae in question relates to the rear headrests. Specifically, check this out: They drop from the ceiling. So you fold away the third row when you're not using it, and then, instead of having a few headrests lying around, where you will certainly lose them, you just fold them back into the ceiling to stow them. They're out of the way, they don't block your visibility, and they're always there for when you want to use the seats again. Isn't this brilliant?!

Unfortunately, despite the brilliance, Land Rover figured out a new headrest solution when they redesigned the Discovery II in 2005 to become the LR3 (or, in other markets, the Discovery III): They created a nifty little headrest design that integrates the headrests into the back seats, allowing the seat to fold down with the headrest still attached. Yes, it's certainly cool -- and no, it's not as cool as the original ceiling-mounted headrests.

Can you do anything useful with this newfound information about Land Rover Discovery headrests? Absolutely not. Will you check the ceiling of the next Discovery you see parked on the street? I suspect you will.
