The hatchback has returned to the automotive world. Everyone is doing hatchbacks now -- even the Chevy Cruze! -- and they've become popular again, not just with car enthusiasts, as regular people are swooping in and joining the hatchback craze. Rejoice! Cargo volume is in!

Also in right now are hot hatchbacks -- high-performance versions of normal hatchbacks, like the Ford Fiesta ST, the Ford Focus ST, the Honda Civic Type R, the Volkswagen GTI, the Volkswagen Golf R, the Mercedes GLA45 AMG, blah blah blah. I could go on for a while. There are about ten hot hatchbacks currently on the market. That's roughly nine more than there were a few years ago.

Actually, it's roughly eight more, because one hot hatchback from our past hasn't made it to 2017: the MazdaSpeed3. Throughout this hatchback revolution, Mazda has continued to make -- and succeed with -- the standard Mazda3 hatchback, but the MazdaSpeed3 was ditched after the 2013 model year, and now it's gone -- nowhere to be found.

This, I think, is a travesty, because the MazdaSpeed3 would be fairing quite well in today's climate -- but with the new crop of hot hatchbacks, everyone has forgotten about it. So let me remind you: The first MazdaSpeed3 was rather handsome, and it had 263 horsepower, and it was cool. The second MazdaSpeed3 was a little uglier, in the sense that it always looked like it was smiling, and it also had 263 horsepower, and it was cool, too. And both of these things could do zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds!!!!

If you want to get in on the hot-hatch craze but don't want to spend big money doing it, the MazdaSpeed3 is a pretty good deal: The average price for a second-generation model on Autotrader is just $14,800, while the average first-generation model is a mere $9,400. And yes, you're welcome for reminding you about the hot hatch that came before its time.
