As some of you know, I went to Dubai a couple of weeks ago and reviewed some cars, including the new Chevy Corvette ZR1 -- and several others that haven't yet been posted. But as I was driving around, I also experienced some interesting automotive occurrences, including this one: I was passed by the vehicle shown above, and I discovered that Mitsubishi still sells the Montero Sport in foreign markets.

Many of you likely remember the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, as it was sold in the U.S. from 1997 to 2004 and, frankly, it was Mitsubishi's last successful vehicle; their final bastion of strong sales before the last 15 years of doldrums and various articles questioning whether they're going to be pulling out of the U.S. market sometime soon.

This begs the question: Given that model's success, and given the huge recent increase in SUV popularity … why doesn't Mitsubishi offer this thing in America?

The latest version went on sale only two years ago, and it honestly looks pretty nice -- better than most of the other SUVs on the market, or at least more distinctive. In Asia, it's sold with a few 4-cylinder diesel options, but buyers in the United Arab Emirates (where I saw it) can get it with a 3.0-liter V6, which is the one we'd want in the States. It's 188 inches long, meaning it's somewhere between RAV4 and Highlander, and (from some quick Googling) the interior looks pretty decent. Seriously, why isn't this thing sold here?

Of course, I'm no Mitsubishi product planner, so I might be missing something -- possibly including the fact that this vehicle (which appears to be body-on-frame) may just not be fuel efficient enough for U.S. sales. But doesn't this seem like a slam dunk for a company that really needs to score some points? Either way, now you know the Mitsubishi Montero Sport never really died -- it merely went away.
