My wife and I recently had the pleasure of moving from the D.C. area to Richmond, Virginia, because I got a new job. Of course, as we settled into our new home, I've started noticing several automotive-related things in my neighborhood and along my short commute.

For example, there are a lot more large, modified trucks around here than outside of D.C. This is probably due to the fact that we're further south -- and because there's actually space for them. I've also noticed quite a few MR2 Spyders around here. I rarely saw them up in D.C., but they're oddly common in this city.

There are also some houses that sport neat little collections of cars. For example, there's a house I drive by every day that has a couple of hearses, and another that has two red Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams and a red fifth-generation Camaro convertible all parked out front. Those are cool and all, but nothing matches the weirdness of the house that has three sixth generation Chevy Monte Carlo coupes parked in the driveway -- all in great condition.

Yes, you read that right. Someone out there is a connoisseur of the last-generation Chevy Monte Carlo, and it appears they're hoarding them. Incidentally, that guy lives a few houses over from the Trans Am collector. Maybe they know each other.

But why would someone love the Monte Carlo so much? I've been in one, and it wasn't much to write home about -- in my view, they're typical pre-bailout GM cars. Sure, you could get it with an SS package that boosted the horsepower up to 240, but none of the examples in this person's driveway are equipped with that package. Rather, these have about 200 horsepower fed through a pretty unmotivated automatic transmission.

Regardless of this guy's reasons for collecting these, it does serve as an important reminder. Almost any car can be loved, and people can be enthusiasts of anything. I'm sure these Monte Carlos make this guy happy, and as a car enthusiast, I'm happy that he was able to build himself a collection of Monte Carlos.
