If you're a car enthusiast, you're probably aware of some pretty ridiculous automotive rebadging. For instance, the Neon was sold as the Dodge Neon, the Chrysler Neon and the Plymouth Neon, with no discernible differences aside from the badging. And the entire Mercury brand subsisted on rebadged Fords from the 1980s until finally getting the ax in 2011.

But how about the time the Subaru Forester was sold as the Chevrolet Forester?

Yes, this actually happened. At some point in the early 2000s, General Motors took the Subaru Forester compact crossover, threw a Chevrolet bow-tie emblem on the front and sold it in India as the Chevrolet Forester. This was about the thinnest rebadge imaginable, as they didn't even bother to change the styling. Or the wheels. Or the interior. Or the model name.

Here's how it came about: For several years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, General Motors owned a stake in Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries. The most obvious result of this ownership was the Saab 9-2X, a station wagon sold by GM-owned Saab that was entirely a Subaru Impreza underneath. But the 9-2X wasn't the only General Motors-and-Subaru mash-up -- there was also the Chevrolet Forester.

Although the Chevrolet Forester died when GM sold its stake in Fuji Heavy Industries in the mid-2000s, it still lives on in our hearts and minds -- except for the fact that nobody has ever heard of it, which is probably a good thing.
