As your resident hot-hatch nerd, I am pleased to announce that Toyota is making a performance version of the Yaris! They're calling it the Toyota Yaris GRMN, (which stands for "GAZOO Racing Masters of the Nurburgring," and no, I'm not kidding about that), and it looks like it may as well be a road-going reflection of the Yaris Rally Car that has been tearing it up in the World Rally Championship. That is a very good thing.

The Yaris GRMN will get a supercharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder that will put out 210 horsepower, which is about 105 hp more than a regular Yaris. That's a huge bump in power for a 2,400-pound vehicle, so it should make the Yaris GRMN an absolute riot to drive. That power number is also a bit higher than that of the Ford Fiesta ST, which indicates where Toyota is aiming its sights. The Yaris GRMN also gets a number of modifications designed to make it handle better -- like a limited-slip differential, thicker anti-roll bars and a new suspension setup that's been developed specifically for this car. Unfortunately, you also can probably expect the car to have the same mediocre interior quality as the GT 86 -- but at least it should offer a ridiculous-enough driving experience to look past it.

Sadly, we probably won't see the hot Yaris here in the States. The Yaris GRMN was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show by Toyota Europe -- and considering that the World Rally Championship doesn't have much of an American viewership, Toyota probably doesn't think the new model will sell well here. I think they're wrong. Toyota's lineup in the U.S. desperately needs an injection of fun. Their only real brand enthusiasts currently are people who probably don't care about cars at all, while they've only really been able to snag the enthusiast market with the GT 86. With the much-storied rebirth of the Supra that's apparently on its way, it may be a good idea to start getting consumers to equate Toyota with performance.

So give us the Yaris GRMN, Toyota. Besides, Ford has been running the subcompact hot-hatch game over here too long. Give them something to worry about!
