In 2018, Volkswagen will bring out the new Arteon, and the CC will be consigned to the pages of automotive history. While the Arteon looks pretty awesome, I have to admit I'm a bit sad to see the CC go. It was pretty revolutionary when it came out back in 2009, being one of the pioneers of the now ubiquitous "four-door coupe" design you now see everywhere. So how does it currently stack up?

I received one as a service loaner recently from Lindsay Volkswagen in Dulles, Virginia, while while my GTI was in the shop, so I had a couple of days to fiddle around with it. The model I drove was the base-level trim, but it still came pretty well-equipped with adaptive headlights, automatic dual-zone climate control and 12-way adjustable heated front seats.

Under the hood was the same 200 horsepower turbo four that is in my GTI, attached to the widely acclaimed 6-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission you can find throughout the Volkswagen world. Although it's spry, the CC really feels more like a semi-luxurious highway cruiser than a corner carver. It drove nicely, but it's not as sporty as VW would have you believe. Nonetheless, the CC feels much nicer than the Passat. It feels more solid on the road, there's less wind noise and the CC's interior feels a bit more refined than the cabin of its more plebeian brother. All in all, I enjoyed driving it.

The biggest question of the CC is "can you justify the price?" On one hand, it's a nice looking car that is fairly well equipped, and it comes with a reasonable amount of power -- but for the same money, you can get a base-level Audi A4, with the same engine and dual-clutch transmission. That being said, that base-level A4 does not come with navigation, heated seats, satellite radio or highly adjustable seats like you'd get for the same price in the CC.

At the end of the day, as much as I like the Volkswagen CC, I don't think the value is really there anymore. The CC is very nice, but it's definitely dated and in need of replacement. By all accounts, the Arteon will be a definite improvement that would make it capable of competing with the standard luxury brands. And while I've always enjoyed the CC's looks, and while I find it to be a capable, stable car on the road, its day in the sun is over. Unless you're getting a great deal, wait for the Arteon.
